  Anti cancer medication
Mesna Injection is a detoxing agent to inhibit the hemorrhagic cystitis induced by ifosfamide. It is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, aqueous solution of clear and colorless to light pink appearance in clear glass multidose vials for intravenous administration. Mesna Injection multidose vials also contain 10.4 mg of benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The solution has a pH range of 6.5 to 7.3. It is used to prevent bleeding from the bladder during ifosfamide or cyclophosphamide chemotherapy.

Appearance
It is sterile, nonpyrogenic, aqueous solution of clear and colorless to light pink in color.

Uses
  • It is used along with ifosfamide or cyclophosphamide to protect against a bladder condition called hemorrhagic cystitis
  • It is used as a prophylactic agent in various medications
  • It helps in preventing kidney problems.
How to use \ dosage ?
This medication is administered by injection into a vein by a health care professional. It is taken for over 15-30 minutes at 4 hours interval . It must be given along with each ifosfamide dose and drink at least a quart (4 cups) of liquid each day while taking this medication, unless directed otherwise by your doctor

Safety tips
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of other illnesses, allergies. This drug may make you
  • Dizzy or drowsy
  • Limit alcoholic beverages
  • Use caution engaging activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery
  • Drink lots of liquids (8-12 cups a day) on the day(s) of your treatment and the day after your treatment. This helps prevent bladder and kidney problems.
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR OR GET EMERGENCY HELP IMMEDIATELY IF YOU HAVE:
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Uncontrolled nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Signs of bladder problems such as blood in urine, frequent need to pass urine, pain when you pass urine

Common side effects
Most side effects are caused not by mesna, but by the chemotherapy or other medicines taken with mesna. Some of common effects are :
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling and rashes
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Weakness or unusual tiredness
  • Flushing
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
