Amlodipine besylate is an orally administered drug, used for treating hypertension and angina pectoris. It has a long duration action for treating them. This calcium channel blocker is available in tablet form. The tablets are available in varying potencies of 5mg and 10 mg depending on the severity of the individual case.

Working
The drug inhibits the trans membrane influx of calcium ions into the cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. It is very useful for treating chronic, stable and vasospastic angina. The drug works by blocking the calcium needed for muscle contraction and works primarily on the arterial muscle. The effect of this drug is to relax the arterial muscles, leading to their dilation and finally a drop in the blood pressure within them.

Dosage: 5 to 10 mg once a day

Contra- Indications: Hypersensitivity

Side Effects
The drug has certain side effects, that can affect individuals in different ways. The following are some of the side effects, that are often associated with the drug:

• Headache
• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Flushing
• Palpitation
• Nausea

The drug should not be given to pregnant and lactating women, the dosage of the drug should be reduced when given to elderly. The side effects of the drug mentioned above may or may not occur in individuals.
